Well, warm weather is here!
Abundant rain this year is producing great-looking lawns for homeowners keeping their mower blades set on HIGH. We recommend raising your mower height through the summer. 3.5" is the top setting on most residential mowers. Mowing high is critical. Commercial mowers generally are handling this well. But homeowners cutting too low are seeing exposed soil surfaces, speeding up the breakdown of early pre-emergent, and providing the perfect environment for crabgrass to creep through between applications.
We also have seen some brown patch areas improving on their own within 7–10 days. Higher-cut lawns are recovering better, while lower-cut areas tend to show more infestation. And, as always, we continue to monitor for army worms and grubs.
What Should You Do?
- Please keep mowing at this higher height from now until Labor Day. Doing so helps alleviate the need for aeration and overseeding in areas that would otherwise stay healthy.
- Deep watering (1 inch every 3–4 days, if there's no rain) to help roots rebound.
